Alright ladies, here is my secret tip to reducing oily skin, improving skin tone, healing your skin and slowing signs of aging over the long term!
My Skincare Journey
Throughout high school and college, I used to be very self-conscious about my skin. I was constantly breaking out, had acne scars and finally accepted the fact that I just had oily skin. No matter how much mattifying powder or how many blotting papers I used, my face would be oily again after just a few hours.
After switching to a more plant-based, non-toxic skin care routine just a few short years ago, I realized that I had been doing skin care all wrong.
Many of the products I was using to help with my skin were drying out my face. I was using chemicals to help get rid of my acne (which didn't work) instead of relying on the power of plants. I don't know when dermatologists were taught to prescribe these drying chemicals or products like proactive, but they simply didn't work and only put nasty chemicals onto my face.
I thought all these products that dried up my skin would make the oil and acne go away. In doing so, my skin was stripped of it's natural oils. When this happens, the skin starts producing more oils to combat the dryness.
That all changed when I tried my first oil serum.
Fight Oil with Oil
I received my first facial serum from a company that asked me to try some of their products. These facial serums were made out of cold-pressed oils that came from plants.
One I started using these facial oils on my skin in the evening, I noticed a complete shift in my complexion. I was no longer experiencing the oily forehead that I for over 8 years. After diving into research on plant-based skin care, I learned why this was happening.
When you apply oil to your skin, your skin thinks it has plenty enough oil and doesn't need to produce more. Voila! Oily skin gone. Simple as that. Fight oil with oil.
The best oils to use on your skin if you tend to have more oily skin are ones like grapeseed, sweet almond or jojoba oil. These are all plant based, but what is special about them is that they are light-weight oils that are similar to our own skin's sebum. When applied to the skin, they can help to tame down your own skin's oil production.
Other Benefits of Skin Serums
Oil-based serums aren't just great for limiting oil production. Because they are filled with amazing botanical nutrients, they can have a variety of benefits. Some oils have great anti-aging properties, such as rosehip oil, camellia oil and any berry oil (Read more on anti-oxidants for antiaging skin care benefits in this post here!).
They can help brighten, reduce redness or inflammation, de-puff and moisturize.
How to Use Facial Oils
Really quickly, I wanted to mention how to use facial oil. Since they are oily, I always leave mine on overnight. I don't typically use them in the morning or under makeup. I just use a generous amount in the evening, apply it to my skin and let it sit and absorb overnight! If I don't have something early in the morning, I will sometimes put it on and then wash it off before I go somewhere or before I apply any makeup.
LadyLoved Oil Collection
I LOVE trying new oil serums. I recently reached out to a company called LadyLoved, whose natural skin care products I had been eyeing for a while...
They so graciously sent me their base oil set to try, and I wanted to share about some of these products with you! This is not a sponsored post. I am simply sharing about these products because I know the magic that oils can work on your skin, and these ones were AMAZING!
For a quick review on the oils, you can watch this video review here!

This Opal Aura Serum is da BOMB! It smells like candy and has incredible ingredients. And no, it does not go on orange! All the oils go on clear even though they may initially have color to them.
Here are some of the ingredients in it and their benefits according to the LadyLoved website:
Sea Buckthorn: Sourced from the heart of Siberia, this powerhouse is brimming with antioxidants. Loaded with vitamins C and E, brings vitality to skin while helping to smooth the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
Borage Oil: With the highest concentration of gamma-linoleic acid, possesses strong anti-inflammatory properties. Moisturizes and improves the skin’s appearance while establishing a youthful and vital glow.
Cranberry Oil: A light weight astringent oil rich in carotenes and polyphenols, found to repair cellular damage caused by UV rays and other free radicals.
Amaranthus Squalane: Replenishes depleted squalene, an oil vital to skin health that becomes depleted with age and stress. Without it, skin becomes dull, dry, cracked and lifeless.
I noticed my complexion was so clear and even while using this oil. One of the main ingredients is jojoba oil, which I mentioned earlier as it has a similar composition to our skins sebum. If you have oily skin, this would be a great lightweight option for you. Highly recommend it as an evening facial oil.
The Rarify Serum was created to remove excess oil and bacteria in order to quickly diminish blemishes and assist in the prevention of future spots. I love that it has Tea Tree Essential Oil in it, because it is an AMAZING oil for fighting breakouts. It is anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory, so it helps to reduce redness, inflammation and future breakouts. Here are some of the other amazing ingredients:
Pracaxi: Packed with potent nutrients, minerals, vitamins, omega 3 and 6 fatty acids, and amino acids. Further nourishes the skin with vitamins A, C, and B along with plentiful zinc, magnesium, and potassium. An incredible super-food for your skin.
Curcuma: An antiseptic and disinfectant, is known to eliminate germs naturally. Additionally strengthens skin and improves its elasticity, tone, and resistance to blemishes.
Laurel: Well-known for its astonishing ability to diminish acne and rashes. Doubles as a cicatrisant, helping scars to fade in order to promote flawless skin.
Frankincense: Not only calming to the senses, but also a premier oil in the treatment of breakouts due to its long established antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties.
In using this for the past several weeks, I can personally say that this works. When I have had a blemish coming on, I applied this serum and it never got any bigger. Within a day or two, it was gone.
This Oxygen Anti-Aging Sport Serum was my favorite of all the products! I chatted with Mila, the founder and formulater of the LadyLoved products, about why she created this serum. Because she was an avid runner, she made this serum to help reduce the signs of aging brought about by exercise and stress. As a personal trainer and fitness nut, it was perfect for me!
Not only does it have amazing benefits, but it feels like silk on your skin and has Blue Tansy Essential Oil in it. Blue tansy is one of my favorites because it has a refreshing smell, beautiful blue color, and is great for calming the skin. Here are some of the other beneficial ingredients:
Blue Tansy : Rich in chamazulene, provides cooling relief to all types of inflamed skin while fostering gentle, soothing cell regeneration.
Amaranthus Squalane : Replenishes depleted squalene, an oil vital to skin health that becomes depleted with age and stress. Without it, skin becomes dull, dry, cracked and lifeless.
Borage Oil : With the highest concentration of gamma-linoleic acid, possesses strong anti-inflammatory properties. Moisturizes and improves the skin’s appearance while establishing a youthful and vital glow.
Chamomile Infusion Renowned for its anti-inflammatory effects, is a potent herbal extract for revitalizing distressed skin. A powerful cell rejuvenator that works to soothe and restore skin’s suppleness.
Other Ways To Use Plant-Based Oil
LadyLoved also had four other amazing oils for a variety of benefits!
Jupiter Anti-Puff Under Eye Serum - This stuff worked wonders! It really helped lighten up the dark circles I often get under my eyes and has ingredients like Rosehip Oil for anti-aging benefits.
Manna Hydrating Body Oil - This body oil smelled amazing, most likely because of the Jasmine essential oil in it. I used this post shower and most often on my cuticles to help with my winter dryness.
Safari Oil Natural Insect Repellent - I didn't get the chance to try this oil because it is currently the middle of winter in Utah...BUT, what I do love about this oil is that they make it smell nice. I was a little worried when I saw citronella on the ingredients, because it typically has a strong, stinky smell. But they blended this oil so nicely and it smells fresh and fruity! Can't wait to use it once summer hits.
Azure Post-Sun Serum - Again, didn't get the chance to try this one out yet since it is the middle of winter. But it smells amazing, is beautiful and has ingredients that help combat the anti-aging signs of sun stress.
As you can see, plant based-oils can have incredible benefits, especially when it comes to skin care. That is why using facial serums is my #1 Tip for For Glowing, Oil-Free Skin. I hope you will check out LadyLoved and all of Mila's products! They really are effective and beautifully crafted.
